The Committee

The Committee:

The organisers of The Captain’s Daughters are a committee of four, aged 23-25, 3 of whom are currently students and all volunteers with various sail training charities around Britain, such as The Ocean Youth Trust and Trinity sailing. We also have the support and expertise of professional skipper Nick Legg who has experience training volunteers and who we have known through this for many years. 

Director: Clare Thorpe (23). 8640 hours as volunteer on sail training boats including: GMC, Lord Rank, James Cook, Vegewind and Anne Margaretha. Clare aka Clareski is our Skipper this season. She passed her RYA yachtmaster last summer and has numerous qualifications including RYA first aid, sea survival, VHF radio and Dingy instructor. In her spare time from doing research for her Msc in Geomicrobiology she captained the Manchester University sailing team and represented Northern University sailing in Britain. Clare is now working as a PHD student at Leeds University,

Treasurer: Colette Mathewman (25). approx. 3864 hours on board sail training vessels including Europa, Vegawind and various OYT boats. Colette, aka Cliggy is currently in her final year of a PHD in plant science. In her spare time last year she organised a sponsored cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats and raised £1000 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

 Secretary: Emma Clifton (25). Emma, aka Titch is now working full time on the Spirit of Fairbridge. In the past she has volunteered extesively on GMC as both watch leader and bosun, but has also sailied on James Cook, Vegawind and Black Diamond. Having completed her degree in outdoor education, she spent the 2008 season working as mate on Ocean Spirit of Moray. She has her RYA Yachtmaster theory, day skipper theory, competent crew, and her short range certificate, and is soon to complete short courses in sea survival, radar, powerboat level 2, diesel engine and first aid, thanks to funding from ASTO. She hopes to also take her coastal skipper and firefighting courses this year.

Website Manager: Sarah Palmer (25) 2520 hours as a volunteer on sail Training vessels, primarily on GMC, Alba Venturer, Alba Volunteer and Provident from Trinity sailing.  Sarah is about to begin a PGCE in secondary science, having finished a degree in Chemistry at Glasgow University earlier this year. She has various RYA qualifications including Yachtmaster,  Coastal Skipper,  Yachtmaster Theory, VHF radio, sea survival, first aid, radar and diesel engine.

Advisor: Nick Legg (33) Nick has been involved in sail training for many years now, and used to work as a professional skipper. He now provides invaluable advise and support to The Captain’s Daughters, and will be joining us in the summer to act as bosun, and to aid the crew’s on going training.
