Girls and Sailing..
Here are some extracts from ‘Sail the Tall Ships’ by Alan Rouse. It was first published in 1976 and you can see how well things have progressed since then!
‘The STA hadn’t really thought of catering for girls. In fact they rather thought girls wouldn’t be interested in such a mannish activity; a girls place was to wave farewell from the quayside. But girls did want to go.’
‘They thought the girls would soon get fed up, but they didn’t.’
‘…after a while they learned not to giggle when wearing a long nightie and sea boots to the wash room.’ Hee hee hee
‘The girls are usually bubbling over with bright smiles and high spirits and bring a sparkle to the event that might not otherwise have been there.’ - Well some things never change!
